Camps. Have you ever noticed how many different meanings one word can have? For example, there is the military training camp, a boot camp and even a training camp. Or perhaps the word reminds you of times where you used to play cowboys in the neighborhood and pretended to sit around a campfire. It may even remind you of some of the great times you and your family had when you went camping at some remote lake.
The purpose for setting up a camp can be for different reasons also. Some may be done strictly for pleasure, like summer camp or camping with the family. There are also some that are for training purposes, much like a military boot camp, and sometimes it is necessary to camp in certain areas to carry on research.
Have your kids expressed an interest in going to camp in the summer? There are many, many different types of summer camps for kids and usually several of them will fit your needs. Studies have indicated that children in the 6 to 10 age group will adjust much quicker to camp, as opposed to an older child.
You may also be under the impression that your child and a friend going at the same time may make it easier for them. However, usually the opposite is true. If it is their first time at camp, then they are likely to stick together and resist the idea of making new friends. Or sometimes one child will be more outgoing, making new friends while the other becomes more shy or withdrawn.
If you have a child with a specific interest or hobby, then many summer camp programs include a specialty camp. If your child enjoys tennis, then a tennis camp may be perfect. There are computer camps for the techie in your family, or perhaps an art camp for your budding Picasso.
Of course, depending on the child’s age there will other options available to you. There are also programs available for children with special needs. These types of programs can really be something special for your child and can give them a great sense of accomplishment.
For the director, The American Camp Association suggests the following minimum requirements: a bachelor’s degree, complete in-service training within the past three years and at least 16 weeks of camp administrative experience before assuming a director’s role. In the end there is only one happy camper to worry about, and that is your own.
Planning on going camping? Great! One of the first things you need to do is choose a spot. Here are several factors you should consider when choosing a camping spot, as well as a few tips for finding a good one.
Accessibility
How are you going to get to your camping spot? Is it a “drive up camping spot” or is access via a foot trail. If access is via a foot trail, I would suggest finding a spot with a half mile or less hike for your first trip.
Views / Attractions
What’s at the camping spot? Does it have good views? No sense going and camping in a boring place when there are many beautiful camping spots available.
Water
Does your camping spot have access to clean water? If not, you’ll have to pack in all of the water you need, including plenty to put out the fire with.
Firewood
Is there access to firewood at the camping spot. If you want a campfire, you don’t want to have to carry in the wood you’ll need! Be sure that you are allowed to harvest firewood for the area you are going. In most areas, you are allowed to pick up dead wood, but not cut down live trees. Live trees do not burn well, anyway.
Campability
If you’re going into “uncharted areas” or plan on camping where there is no established camping spot, be sure that the terrain is such that you can pitch your tent without rolling down a hillside or sleeping on the rocks all night.
Tips for finding a spot
Here are a few places you can start looking for camping spots:
Your kids enjoy the outdoors and going to campgrounds, but there are ways to have fun with your family without leaving home. Are you trying to come up with something fun that you can do without heading off into the woods? You should consider sponsoring a camping trip for your children along with some of their friends. Why not let your children go camping right in your backyard with their friends? Your children will appreciate this opportunity and likely wouldn’t pass it up for the world.
Try and think of some activities that they can do during their “at home” camping outing. There are a lot of ideas you could come up with. With adult supervision your children and their friends can roast marshmallows and tell ghost stories around the fire in your backyard. If you often go camping as a family, you probably have a tent available for sleeping. This can bring the campground right to your home. Since you’re sponsoring this camping experience in your backyard, it is easier to give someone medical attention faster than you would if you were on a campground, should the need arise.
Safety is the biggest factor when camping, even when camping at home. The idea that you’re camping in your backyard ensures safety for your children, due to you having no problems with animals near your property, or at least let’s hope that’s the case. If you have a fenced in yard, this is perfect for those favorite camping activities as you won’t bother the neighbors. This is an experience that your children and their friends will never forget. By letting your children and their friends go camping in your backyard, this gives them a camping experience without you camping with them. You must always check on the kids from time to time to ensure they are following the rules you have laid out. Two way radios can be of great assistance to keep from running in and out of your home when checking on the little campers. It’s just that easy to have a fun camping experience right to your backyard.

Hiking is one of life’s great joys. Fresh air, nature, exercise and good friends. It’s difficult to imagine anything better – if you’re prepared. When you’re not prepared properly, it’s difficult to imagine anything worse. If you hike a few hundred yards around your neighborhood or a few hundred miles around the backcountry, use these tips to get the most enjoyment out of your hiking experience.
#1: Plan your trip. You can plan too little but it’s tough to plan too much.
#2: Get in Shape. Put yourself in the best possible position to enjoy your sport.
#3: Check the weather forecast. Any weather different than you expect can turn a good hike into a not-so-good hike.
#4: Dress for success. Layer your clothing and be very sure of your footwear.
#5: Have the essentials. Your planning will help with this. Take only what is essential and get the lightest gear you can afford – especially for longer hikes.
#6: Plan to be out longer than you think. If you think three hours, plan for six. Four days, plan for a week.
#7: Prepare for the worst. Know first-aid and CPR.
#8: Use of food and water. It’s okay to ration food, but don’t ration water. If you are thirsty, drink. Decision making skills drop drastically when you are dehydrated.
#9: Slow down. If you are hiking only for exercise, you’re missing the best part. Nature is all around, slow down and pay attention. You’ll be rewarded many times over.
#10: Take a friend along. Like most things in life, sharing your hiking passion with someone you care about is awesome.
